Smells Like Rockin Robin

August 12, 2010

Time for a wee break from whining about RGIS to talk about something that I really love – music.

I’ve been a big fan of Mark Vidler (No relation to the East Aurora retail family) and Go Home Productions for more years than I can remember. I’m still in awe of his Sex Pistols – Madonna mash-ups.

MIchael Jackson’s Rockin Robin and Nirvana’s Smells like Teen Spirit mashed up. How does he come up with the combinations? If you are anything like me, you won’t be able to listen to either song in quite the same way after seeing this.

Tear You Apart

October 16, 2009

She Wants Revenge is a band that I don’t know very much about. But this song grabbed my attention when I first heard it a couple of years ago. I even like the narrative of the video.

Too Drunk To . . .

October 10, 2009

Once upon a time in America there was a band called the Dead Kennedys. “Too Drunk to Fuck” was the first record I ever bought by them. Much more recently, Nouvelle Vague (not from America) did a bossa nova cover. I think technically this is Camille’s a capella cover of the Nouvelle Vague cover. Did I mention that Camille has performed with Nouvelle Vague?

I’ve been a big fan of Mark Vidler and
Go Home Productions for years. I think I think he is my favie mash-up artist. Here is one of his latest efforts. Enjoy it before it’s gone

Hero of War

July 11, 2009

One of the advantages of living in Buffalo is that we are in sthe reception area for Toronto’s 102.1 radio station. It is/was the Lovely Lettuce’s favie station. And I think it is pretty good in an psuedo-alternative sort of way.
Any old way, I digress. A few days ago, I heard a song by Rise Against that I loved. Although to be accurate, I loved the song before I knew it was Rise Against.

Embedding is disabled for this video so you will have to go to youtube to watch it.

I think it is a great anti-war song that shows compassion and understanding for the soldiers fighting in the name of our flag. It doesn’t accuse or judge.

He said
“Son…Have you seen the world?
Well, what would you say
If I said that you could.”

Just carry this gun.
You’ll even get paid.”
I said
“That sounds pretty good.

Black leather boots
Spit shined so bright
They cut off my hair
But it looks alright
We marched and we sang
We all became friends
As we learned how to fight

A hero of war
Yeah that’s what I’ll be
And when I come home
They’ll be damn proud of me

I’ll carry this flag
To the grave if I must
Because it’s a flag that I love
And a flag that I trust

I kicked in the door
I yelled my commands
The children they cried
But I got my man
We took him away
A bag over his face
From his family and his friends

They tookoff his clothes
They pissed in his hands
I told them to stop
But then I joined in
We beat him with guns
And batons not just once
But again and again

A hero of war
Yeah that’s what I’ll be
And when I come home
They’ll be damn proud of me

I’ll carry this flag
To the grave if I must
Because it’s a flag that I love
And a flag that I trust

She walked
Through bullets and haze
I asked her to stop
I begged her to stay
But she pressed on
So i lifted my gun
And i fired away

And the shells jumped
Through the smoke
And into the sand
That the blood now had soaked
She collapsed
With a flag in her hand
A flag white as snow

A hero of war
Is that what they see
Just medals and scars
So damn proud of me

And I brought home that flag
Now it gathers dust
But it’s a flag that I love
It’s the only flag I trust

He said
“Son…Have you seen the world?
Well, what would you say
If I said that you could

Industry Giants

April 17, 2009

superdrag cd cover

The ironically titled “Industry Giants” by Superdrag came in the mail last Monday.

It just might be the best Superdrag ever. This is the first cd by the original line-up in this century. It is confirmation of how important Brandon Fisher’s guitar playing was to the Superdrag Sound.

I was already a fan of this band when I realized that Superdrag was more or less a friend of mine’s old band without him in it.

Aspartame

April 17, 2009

Superdrag
is a band that the lovely lettuce and I know personally from our time in Knoxville. We are both big fans. They are a great live band that doesn’t always make good videos.

some of the clouds are not clouds. some of those jets pose death threats. it’s coming around. coming around. some of your rights stolen outright. sometimes lights are not lights. the consuming fires of hell burn this place to the ground. burn it right to the ground. i just write songs. i don’t carry a gun. i want peace and safety for my innocent sons and wife. i just love God i don’t trust in man. armed with the truth against the wickedness at hand. yeah. if you wanna usurp the power. i’ll be ready in a half an hour. i’ll give my life for that. are the devils ever nervous? do they deserve the death they serve us? i’m still not certain of that. sometimes brains are mundane. entertained and restrained and sealed up tight. all the aspartame and the video games and the drugs in the food keeping you subdued so you’ll never recognize who put out the lights. put out the lights. i just play guitar. i can’t stop the war. i want peace and safety for the kids in kandahar. if you love peace and you love mercy you’re bound to cause a little controversy. yeah. if you wanna usurp the power. i’ll be ready in a half an hour. i’ll give my life for that. are the devils ever nervous? do they deserve the death they serve us? i’m still not certain of that. we’ve gotta usurp the power. the devil seeks who he may devour. keep your life intact. the liars in his service conspire to make me nervous. i am certain of that.

I’m So Confused

December 20, 2008

During my journey through the past on youtube tonight, I came across

I’ve been a fan of Richman since his Roadrunner days in the Seventies. But I was surprised when my love interest in another place and time asked if I wrote this song for Richman. When I asked her why, she said “have you met yourself?? That ‘I have to sigh now’ is so you. And you do think too much.”

I suspect that the Richman dancing in the video made her think that perhaps Richman was dancing like me since I’m not a very good dancer.

I recently posted about Sliny Kazik’s cover of “Mariolla” here’s an audio of the original on youtube.

Nothing But the Truth

December 13, 2008

For my birthday, the Boss Mom and the Boss Dad (the lovely Lettuce’s parents) gave me an Ion usb turntable.  We haven’t had a working turntable in the house since around the time we moved to Buffalo.  The plan is to digitalise the 800 or so l.p.’s we have. And in case anyone was wondering, the turntable is plug and play in Linux

Tonight I rediscovered one of my favie albums – “Nothing But the Truth” by  Ruben Blades. Although Blades is mostly known for his Spanish language music (mostly Afro-Cuban and jazz),
this album was in English and more rock-oriented.

If my memory serves me correctly, I think I became aware of “Nothing But the Truth” because of Lou Reed’s contributions to the album. He co-wrote and produced several songs. My favorite of the Blades/Reed songs is “Letters To the Vatican” with one of my favie Lou Reed lyrics “Dear Pope, send me some hope or a rope to do me in”

Oh, yeah, Elvis Costello is another of Blade’s songwriting partners.
